HLN: Trafficking in Human Beings Reached a Peak in 2013

The number of trafficking cases involving sexual exploitation (196), forced begging (12), labor exploitation (183) and the imposition of committing offenses (39) in 2013 was at its highest level in five years. This is evident from the response of Justice Minister Annemie Turtelboom (Open VLD ) to a question of N - VA parliamentarian Theo Francken.

In 2013, one out of three human trafficking cases were dismissed  (33.95 percent). The last five years there were 420 cases of human trafficking and smuggling in the courts and 90 percent of cases did result in a conviction. Fourteen defendants were acquitted. One person was interned.

In the cases initiated in 2013, most defendants were Belgian (250), Iranian (67), Romanian (64), Albanian (43), Pakistani (36), Indian (34) and Syrian (31).

"The figures show that human beings is still present in our society. I find alarming that one in three cases that were opened in 2013 are already closed without follow-up. " says Francken.
